Antares and nebula using a stock zoom lens.

Hi,

Thougt I'd try my hand at some piggy back imaging last night, and chose antares and surrounding nebula.
I used the standard 70 to 300mm zoom lens that came with the Canon 1100D. I think it's done quite a good job, but I don't push it past 200mm the images are terrible above this F/L.

Iv'e also changed ISO ratings, but have come back to 800 as this seems to produce the best results. The one thing that was difficult to do was to process the back ground which was very orange/brown. I overcame this in curves using the black point dropper and the grey point, but no white.

Telescope 8” f/4 astrograph on a HEQ Pro 5 mount, orion mini guider.
Unmodded Canon 1100D at ISO 800.
70 to 300mm zoom lens at 135mm f/5.6
12 x 300 sec subs ISO 800.
11 dark frames, 9 flat frames and 9 bias.
Stacked in DSS and post process in Phototshop.
Cheers,

Justin.

Very nice tho I reckon you could probably push it a bit more?*
I'm getting real itchy to do this with the 60Da!

*Edit, when I tip my laptop screen forward, a bit more blues and reds show up.

Lovely work, especially for a kit lens.

Thanks for the comments.

I'm putting this one on my redo list, it was quite low on the horizon when I started imaging.
Need more data too.

Cheers,

Justin.

Well, I still think its pretty darn good, it is an object that shows, the more more subs - the bettera : )
Would it pay to try the same framing and add the data on top Justin, seems like a sleazable proposition going around , lol ,

All the best and looking on with interest ? !
