hello members this is an 80 picture stack of 15 second exposures @ iso800 on a 1000d @ f6.3
i think the colour of this is better than previous, but i wanted to see what happens without the longer exposures
can anybody tell me if there is a benefit of putting a lot more shorter ones in rather than mixing them up?

Hi Pat,
Nice work. I can only imagine (as a newbie as well) that without the longer exposures you will be missing some of the data that needs the longer exposures and that no matter how many shorter exposures are stacked it will not compensate for that. Of course - I could be wrong

Take the longest subs you can before trailing appears. Let the sensor grab as many photons as it can.
The only reason to take really short subs is if you are going to layer them over your final image eg building an image of M42 and you wish to keep detail in the Trapezium.
Keep at it. Take another 80 subs tonight and add them into the mix.
Are you taking darks too?? And flats??

dave of course that makes sense!
nettie, thats probably why i think m42 never looks quite right to me! it always looks too soft
does it make any difference in the order you stack them?
i have never thought it possible to go out the next night and do it again, what about the rotation? do you need to do the exposures at the same time every night?
i havnt advanced to flats and darks yet, still getting my head around them
bloody hell theres a lot to do!
