A sea change

Hi all,

Just spent a couple of days down along the far eastern Victorian coast to try my hand at some sea scapes. It took me a while to refine my technique to capture the various light conditions in the one shot. Pretty happy with this first one. Got a mountian of images to go through but I'm back to my nine to five tomorrow, so not sure when I will get around to them.

Tamron 10-24mm Lens
Magic glove technique to properly expose the sky.

Of course I couldn't resist getting an astro element in the shot as well......
Cheers
Greg

Haha, well done!

OK, now, instead of using the magic glove technique, invest many hundreds of dollars in graduated neutral density filters, and, let them do the hard work for you.

Thanks H. That means a lot from you. Yeah I know. Some nice grads would have been very handy for this shot. They are definantly on the shopping list but I have resisted so far as I don't yet do enough of this sort of shot to warrant them. ND grads are no good for astro landscapes.

No kidding, Greg, your image is metered to perfection.

The only thing that bothers me is the chromatic aberration. It's quite jarring. Any chance you can clone that out? Perhaps the lens distortion filter in Photoshop will allow you to remove it.

This is where DPP comes into its own when using Canon lenses -- it removes any and all trace of CA. The defaults work out of the box, but, you have the ability to tweak settings.

Thanks once again and thanks for the critique H. I really appreciate it. Wanting to learn and improve as much as possible. I'll see what I can do about that CA. The only reason I was not using my 5D Mk II and Canon 20mm Lens for this was that I didn't want to expose it to the sea mist I was getting at the time. So I stuck the old setup on the tripod instead. I love DPP for intial editing of my images. I'll see what it can do with this 3rd party image or as you say I might be able to cure it in PS.
Cheers
Greg
