The Key

Sticking with "the program" I pushed some older data to the max, with some newer software, but in truth, I think I need a bigger telescope (preferably on a mountain top) to get a better result.

Holy moly. Wow!

I've never seen that much detail in that region before.

Can you do the same with the Homunculous, Peter?

Pretty good! You rarely see detail like that in the finger.

Cheers

Wow - that's great detail & of course the image scale is
just perfect at f12.

I think we all need a big telescope on a mountain
& some adaptive optics would be great too but we
do the best with what we have - and within our budget.

Ta... but I suspect I can do better once I get the RC mirrors back from re-coating.

Thanks Greg. I'd imagine that CDK of yours could easily do something similar on a good night.

I didn't know that.
Maybe the only step up from all the high end gear you have is adaptive optics?
You've done everything else or am I wrong
& you've dabbled in that too?

Err...I did use an AOL for that data.

What hamstrung me for ages was getting a tele-extender in place to cover a big sensor without sag in the optical train. That problem is now solved

I am sorry.
I just read the detail on the photo again and saw "AOL".
Well - that's it then - you've gone as far as you can go.
Only higher altitude & better seeing could improve it.
(as you were saying too)

That is an interesting shot.

Which mountain did you choose?

There is one thing I didn't think of:
RCOS offers an ion milling service -
don't tell me you've had that done too?

Thanks Ross, there are better examples out there...eg from Germans in Namibia, but, hey taken from the 'burbs of Sydney I'm reasonably happy.

Unfortunately, ion-milling is only available in F9.0 optics... I wanted F7.9 so had to settle for "computer polished"

Ahh.. a no-brainer!
Mona Kea.
The Hilton resort just north of Kona is not too shabby either
(took the family there some years ago...highly recommended)
