Venus Mar 19 - IR & UV

Seeing was quite good at 6:30pm this evening, but incoming clouds limited me to one IR,V,UV set. However it was the best UV channel so far!

Here's the synthetic colour image, again credit to Nick for the colour scheme.

Hi Ivan - another super image - the cloud banding is cool! Well done Nick too!

Thanks Matt (from both of us).

Glad you like it Ray, actually I'm pretty pleased with this one too. Definitely my best result with the IR & UV filters so far!

nice image there. Can you explaine the steps involved in creating these colour UV images please?

Superb!
Can't remember ever seeing so much detail in the cloud banding on Venus

Nicolae,

I use a mono camera, and shoot three videos through photometric I, V, and U filters. Stack and sharpen each video, then combine them as RGB channels into a colour image, using I for R, V for G, and U for B. I use Gimp software, loading the three grayscale images as layers then using the Colors->Colorify function on each layer.

I have also seen others get good results shooting R, G, B, and U, and then making an LRGB image but using the U for L. I am going to give that a try next time.

There are a few special purpose "UVenus" filters on the market, which I think are a bit brighter than the Bessel U, but with a C11 and DMK21AU04 camera I still get 30 fps for U, even at f/25, so it's OK (but less than 50% histogram).

Thanks Deeno. This was the best seeing I have had during the daytime for a long while.

Thanks Bob. Of course it is synthetic colour, but I like to think it's how the Venusian's see their own planet from space!

Cheers Derek, I agree. I love a good Saturn as much as anyone, but it's a shame Venus and Mercury don't get much of the spotlight. I suppose it's because the timing is a bit tricky, and it does require a bit more specialised gear.

Very good cloud contrast and UV/IR give fine depth, Venus a bit too low at 20 degrees but great to see it this detailed here.

John.
