Can't see anything in the skies over Sydney, apart from cloud. I did read a news report that meteors have been spotted over Vic. You're lucky.

Appears to have been some biggish fireballs reported in the UK as well. Caused some panic apparently with calls to Civil Defence etc.
Maybe we ran into some unknown debris trail of rocks etc.

A few people at my work saw 2 fireballs over Orbost in East Gippsland last night.

In their words - "It was as big as a bus with heaps of bits like sprinkles coming off it"

Im told there where two in a short period.

This was about 11:30 or so lastnight. Does that match with your sighting Tigion?

RE: East Gippsland meteor/space debris

Yes I saw it. I live in Nungurner in East Gippsland. I've been asking people all day if they saw it. It was shortly after the cricket finished. The cricket was over and before the commentary finished I noticed a very bright light out my south window. I thought it may have been a burning star at first but it was so bright and seemed so close that I rushed over to the window. The light soon became obscured by a thick bunch of gum trees so I ran outside in bare feet (over my very prickly lawn) and caught sight of it again. it looked like a small plane on fire then before long it looked like a very large plane on fire travelling southeast and losing altitude slowly. I watched it for about 20 or 30 seconds and it broke up into small pieces and the light coming from it became much less brilliant. It was only then that I got some perspective of how far away it was, because at first if thought it was a 747 burning up and about to crash into Lakes Entrance (approximately). By the time the debris cooled down it was about due east of my property and it seemed as if it had all cooled before it hit the earth/ocean because it was still in the skyline when it all faded. I'd love to speak to someone about what I saw. please respond, It was the most spectacular thing I've ever seen in the night sky.

P.S. this is my first post because i googled east gippsland meteor and this forum came up.
