A Happy 89th birthday to Sir Patrick Moore!

A Happy 89th birthday to Sir Patrick Moore!

Patrick Moore was born on 4 March 1923 and is a British amateur astronomer who has Legendary status in Astronomy as a writer, researcher, radio commentator and television presenter of the subject, and who is credited as having done more than any other person to raise the profile of astronomy among the general public.
He is the author of over 70 books on astronomy, and presenter of the world's longest-running television series with the same original presenter, The Sky at Night .

I'm a big Fan of Patrick Moore and have read a lot of his books.

As A young Boy I was inspired by his books and it sparked and inspired my interest in Astronomy.
What about other people on the forum.Did he spark your interest in Astronomy?
What's your favourite Patrick Moore Book?

"
Stargazing:Astronomy without a Telescope" is one of my favourites as it doesn't require you to have the latest very expensive GoTo whizz bang telescope to enjoy the night Sky.All you need is your own pair of eyes and star chart.

Also another good book is "Exploring the night sky with binoculars" which again doesn't require space age "I can never afford" that expensive bit of astronomical equipment for those don't have or can't afford a Telescope. All you need is a simple pair of cheap binoculars to start exploring the night sky.

The first astronomy book I ever owned was Sir Pat's "Observers Guide To Astronomy". Wish I still had it. It was a Xmas prezzie from my aunt and pushed me over the edge. By the time I was 16, I had read every astronomy book in our local library.

I was lucky enough to meet Sir Patrick when he was out here in the late 80's. I too have several books of his and no doubt my planetary interests stem from those books. Happy Birthday Sir Patrick

The first I knew of Sir Patrick was when he appeared on The Goodies, as himself, in "Punky Business".
Now I look forward to every issue of The Sky at Night magazine to I can watch his show.
Happy Birthday Sir Patrick, and thank you for sharing your passion and inspiring us all.

I can remember as a kid of 6 or 7 watching Sky at Night on the BBC when we lived in the UK for a couple of years.
Amazing to think he has been doing this show since 1957 and only missed one episode in 2004. I know some people have a certain view of Patrick Moore, but he is out there talking about astronomy and getting people interested.
