Camping at the Dong

Lake Burrendong is a State Park situated around 20km's east of Wellington. We spent a week there over Christmas to escape the soggy Central Coast.

Wish I could have squeezed a scope in as the skies were pretty dark, I did have the bino's though and the first couple of nights were absolute crackers! It's amazing what you can find under a dark sky with bino's. Even had a impromptu sky tour with a group of mostly non-English speaking Chinese campers.

Its a good place to take the family with plenty to do. Particularly if you like fishing. Wellington Caves and Dubbo Zoo are a must see and not far away.

There are a couple of large open grassy camping areas down by the water away from the amenities and lights if you did bring a scope but, you would have to be self sufficient.

Cheers

I hope that tiger was not prowling loose in the camping ground!

Sounds and looks like a nice place, Deeno.

We had some field mushies for dinner, woke up the following morning with no recollection of the night before and a tiger in the tent.

Then Mike Tyson turned up looking for his tiger...............

I've been out to Burrendong several times also, I have relatives living in nearby Mumbil (blink and you'll miss it) and Stewart Town, one of which is a cousin who runs the kiosk at the lake... Did you happen to check out the 'golf course'??? Hehehe

Haven't been out there for a while, but the last time was during the big drought, the water level was so low that the boat ramp ended about 50m from the waters edge, although I hear it's a lot more full now...

Pretty popular place particularly with the locals. A lot of permanent sites with some pretty radical ski boats parked in front!

Seems they've given up on the "golf course" as it hasn't been maintained for a good while.

They do have a half decent water slide though (nearly drowned some kids who were lingering at the bottom) and Elara (15 months) loved the baby pool.

Facilities were kept clean (having to find 20 cent pieces was a pain to find for hot water) and the kiosk was great without being over priced, kept the better half happy.

The dam was 150% capacity a couple of months ago!
