Network help needed

I need a bit of a hand setting up my home network. I have a Netgear broadband modem and router and when everything is hooked up I get the "Local Area Network Connected" but I can't seem to share files between the different computers. I'd like to be able to download stuff from this laptop to one of the bigger HDD on the desktops. (I've only got about 700 meg left on this laptop after tonight little effort) and it takes forever with a 256 meg usb removable drive.

Any thoughts guys and gals?

Start playing around with it.
First try the Network assit.
It will create a disk which you install into the other computers and sets up those computers to match. Then connection should be one step closer if not complete..
Your basic setup should be :
Main PC with router as the server with address 192.168.0.1 .
Your other pc's should have addresses anything else higher then that . eg 192.168.0.23 etc
You must have the Share files enabled in your settings in your Network properties.
Then finally you must share the devices, eg. C: drive etc..
Just goto drive properties and select share enable on all PC's.
You may have other issues if your using wireless, like ADHOC etc, which then needs security keys, but i recommend no security if your just close to your system.
No real simple answer really. Can get really hard with routers, internet sharing etc..
Oh yeah, then the FIREWALL problems..
I think just connect a long 20 meter or so network cable to your PC, much much easier..

Hi Paul. I agree with Gama. Most likely thing is you haven't yet shared files/folders. In Windows Explorer just right click on the directory you want to share and you will find an option to share it. Helps if you log onto both machines with the same username and pw.
If using the router as a hub you can configure it from any browser - it will be in the manual - but usually something like http://192.168.1.1 or similar.
As long as these things are done, then the network wizard should sort everything else out for you

Had no luck with the router . I have all the appropriate directories shared etc and have run the network wizard but it just didn't want to happen. I wasn't able to create a network disk as I don't have floppy drives on either computer. Isnt' that the most rediculus thing. The floppy is dead, laptops and PC don't even come with the drive unless you specifically ask for it now, yet the network wizard requires you to construct a network disk on a floppy. C'mon MS get with the times. Sheesh


I ended up doing as you suggested Gama and simply connecting with the network cable. Pulled the PC one out of the router and plugged it directly into the laptop. A bit of fiddlin' and sweet as.

Now all I need is either a DVD burner or a 300gig HDD or both

Hi Paul

If you are running a Firewall (in my case Norton's Firewall), don't forget to run the firewall wizard to detect your network and allow communications, otherwise the firewall may block the other computer.
