The Future of Glass

What was once in the realm of sci-fi is becoming reality. This is really cool. I hope we see this technology sooner than later.

Very nice video, and it's probably not too far off. Most of these things are possible now but are probably still just a little too expensive on such a large scale. Give it 10-15 years and it'll be very common I think.

I say 30 to 50 years. These videos are a bit like the concept cars they are for publicity rather then any product they actually plan to make.
Let alone the issues and unlikelyhood of mass compatableity issues being resolved.

Thanks Peter, cool video.
At the rate our technology is travelling at I don't think it will be that long before it's all reality.

Cheers Daniel.

Very interesting. Not sure I'd wanna carry something that big around all day, no matter how light. Keys and wallet and your good to go.

Very nice and futuristic, but still seems a way off to me.

One thing I am looking forward to is a move away from glass to a lighter substance. Something like the iPad needs to become significantly lighter (let's say 1/5th its current weight at least) so it is more easily held for long periods and passed between people, etc.

Thanks for the link to this Corning promotional video.

One aspect that they highlight in the medical remote conferencing dramatization
is the use of glass optical fiber [3:34] in order to communicate enough information
at sufficient bandwidth to provide a virtual presence. The foundation for that
technological revolution is taking place right now in many parts of the world,
with the massive deployment of optical fibers. China announced last year that,
like Australia, it is fast-tracking the replacement of its entire copper network
for a passive optical fiber network to the home, supplying up to 100Mb/s.
They plan to spend close to $300 billion to reach the first 100 million people by the
end of 2015.

Some huge contacts by players such as Alcatel-Lucent were
announced in November for what will be the world's largest optical fiber deployment to date.

Hang on to your hat's. The world is about to get a whole lot smaller and faster yet
in the near future as we transition to purely digital communication's infra-structure
and it will then start to accelerate even more from there.

True that Gary Isn't it great. Thanks for the info too, I didn't know that China is investing in optic fibre network. Cheers

I can't help but wonder (wish!) for 3D projection technologies. If you're device sits on the desk and projects some kind of holographic display, could be manipulated and viewed in 3D space.

I was really fascinated by watching the blokes there zip the info from their "glass" pad to another device or to the wall.

Watching this sort of reminded me of when I saw 2001 Space Odyssey recently (had been a while since I last saw it) and the concepts from 1968 relevant to today.

Arthur C Clarke was always ahead of his time and spot on with accuracy of details wasn't he. We got the tablets a bit late, but no-ones seems to have sorted out a HAL yet
