M42 Atik 4000

Lovely weather last 2 days. At last managed to image M42 with my new Atik 4000.

This image is LRGB 30:30:30:30 10min each. Used 30sec core mask.

Cropped sightly due to L Flats not quite right. Will fix that next time around with longer flat duration.

Comments welcomed

Nice Paul, the core looks good but the bigger stars need some work to either reduce the halo';s and processing artifacts or blend them in and smooith them a bit.

Nice job for just 2 hrs on a mono camera.

3rd go is better Paul. M42 is a good challenge due to its varying levels of brightness and richness in colour yet fainter dust.

Good luck with it. I am only just finding out how much work really needs to go into managing the post processing side of things.

Darrin...

Nice shot, Paul....3rd one's the best

You'll have to tell "Mr Running Man" if he keeps running in that position, he's going to fall down

Unless he has velcro on the bottom of his shoes

Great effort Paul.....there is more to M42 than just the core mate,so look at the area surrounding the core as well before you even look at the core.

Step 1: duplicate image.

Step 2: stretch image to reveal all the surrounding dust.

Step 3:Stretch the duplicate to reveal fine detail structure around the core and keeping an eye on stars....at the moment there very clipped.

Step 4: Blend the fine detail from the Duplicate image to the hard stretched image.

Step 5: stretch the short sub exposure for the core to reveal good structure in the trap.

Step 6: combine trap to step 4 blended image.

Paul, this is just a guide to a work flow that will work If you give It the time and patience It deserves.

ps. Don't forget to have fun!

Thanks Louie

I used an ED80 in the city with a LP filter for this image. I use a similar routine of masking and stretching as you outlined.

I suspect that there simply isnt any more dust to stretch out unfortunately - really requires larger aperature or sharper optics. The Camera seemed to compensate for this as much as possible though

The clipping is an issue in my routine somewhere. I am still trying to figure it out as it seems to be clipped simply after my stacking processes and not before. I need to continue to investage why I get clipping before I process the combined images.

Very well done Paul, You don't need sharper optics, the ED80 has very sharp optics already
After stacking there should be something like DDP in the stacking program and that you can use for preprocessing and get rid of the clipping.

Nice! Wish you had a larger version though - she's too beautiful for such a small resolution...

You'd be amazed what you can tease out once you got your processing down. You got a great setup Paul and the ED 80 is a fine instrument that has been keeping a lot of astro nuts happy for years.

Looking forward to any future repros!

Cheers Ivo. I will be reprocessing this one from scratch! And I will save in higher res! Mills DPP tip will help this a lot.

M42 Sidonio using DD

Finally (and more correctly forced to by the clouds) have reprocessed the image usine Digital Development Processing TM. Got rid of clipping and I think makes the image more sooth.
