Hi Paul

What happens if you select “No” to the screen prompt to update satellite, comet and asteroid data files at start up? Does SNP continue to launch successfully?

Cheers

Dennis

Yep it loads normally Dennis. It doesn't seem to matter if I choose update from the launch option or from the Livesky menu.

Hi Paul

I just tried my installation and it updated all files as normal at the start up, so it seems that the SNP server is accessible.

I wonder if your Firewall, Router and/or anti-virus is blocking attempts to access the SNP server?

IIRC, you may be able to manually download the .txt files and place them in the SNP folder on your PC as a temporary fix.

Cheers

Dennis

That was my thoughts as well Dennis but I have no idea (well very little) how to check what is being blocked.

I have a look around the the files Dennis and see how I go. Atm I'm thinking to try a reinstall and see how that goes.

Hi Paul

What OS are you running – are you logged on with admin rights?

Check under “File” then “preferences” and see if you can Update from there. Maybe reset back to factory Defaults and see if that works?

Cheers

Running Win 7. I've tried to update from there as well Dennis. I'll try a reinstallation tomorrow and see how that goes

Paul,
To try and see what is happening you can give this a go: get task manager going, right click on task bar at the bottom and select task manager. Pick Network and watch activity. Click the start button/circle and type cmd into the search box, enter. That gives you a dos box (command window). Type netstat -an into the dos box and see a list of all network connections on the PC. Leave both of them active.

Start SNP as admin, ie: right click the icon and pick start as administrator. When it starts trying to update, press up arrow in the dos box to repeat the netstat command and see if it has a new valid connection going, check the task manager and see if there is any download activity going on.

If it all looks dead, just reinstall SNP over what's already there. Warning, that will probably return any config changes you have made back to default.

Also do full scan with your anti virus software.

I feel your pain ....

Just before you go through a re-install, can you access SNP on-line resources from the “Help” menu?

“Check for Updates” and “Online Help”

Cheers

If you deinstall and reinstall, make sure you right click on setup and select "run as administrator" for some reason only fathomable to microsoft this will often result in a different install to normal, despite the fact that your user account already has admin rights.

Found one suggestion about the firewall so I checked and manually added SNP. Still no good. I'll keep looking.

Uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled as admin. Same problem. Turned firewall and antivirus off, still no good.

I disconnected from the wireless router and and try the update and get the message that "SN is unable to connect to the internet at this time". I didn't get that message before. Reconnecting to the router and SN hangs when i try the data update.

Does that tell us anything?
