Observing Chair

Hi Everyone,

Before purchasing any telescope what is your opinion on using a observing chair? Is it essential?

I was mainly thinking of using this for a dobsonian however how many people use observing chairs?

Does anyone have any good ideas on using everyday chairs they have adapted for use in astronomy, or is it just easier to buy such as chair from your local astronomy dealer?

Thanks in advance on your thoughts.

I have a Bintel observing chair and it is really useful. When hunting faint objects great to relax and concentrate on the object. Easily adjustable and robust.
Only drawback is that is black so occasionally I trip over it.

Hi Aaron and Malcom , I have been looking at getting one of these as well , the price is good at Bintel , and I was wondering what the build quality was like ? I just hope its better than some of the outdoor furniture sold at Bunnings . That stuff is lucky to last a year out side . Its rubbish .

Build quality is very good, solidly made and robust. I weigh 94kg and have no worries about it holding my weight and would hold a much heavier person than me!

Thanks Malcolm , I weigh about 105kg , and for the price I will get one , its gotta be easier than using a chair , especialy when I am using my 127mm , that can get uncomfortable really fast . I enjoy sitting when I am viewing .

I'll jump in and offer a big thumbs up for the chairs from Bintel.

They are very well made and strong enough to support a great deal of weight (including me). In a pinch, I have used mine as a step stool with no problems. The hook and ladder design make them slip proof and the flared feet keep them steady on most terrains.

I can also vouch for the build quality...I was the original importer who passed the business on to Bintel when we got relocated to the USA.

While I am not now affiliated with either the manufacturer or Bintel I can not speak highly enough of this product. It has added greatly to my enjoyment of the hobby.

Cheers!

I own a stellar chair now but before that I use to use a workshop gas lift stool like the one below. Don't be concerned about the rollers, they stay steady on grass or dirt. They're readily available on ebay for about $45.00

I have a gaslift stool from Officeworks (though prob all much the same) very comfy, goes up and down easy, and can move easily from books to scope.

Yes, you need a chair, it makes things much more comfortable.

those gas lift chairs look cool , but I like the fold away design of the Bintel chairs , especially when getting packed for a night's viewing out of town.
