Laptop connected to the desktop monitor, some help please

Hi guys, just a question for you computer experts, I have connected my lap top to my desk top monitor, and that is fine as i have now two screens with the same display.
Is there a way to keep it connected and viable after i close the lid on the lappy.
As soon as i close the lid on the laptop the monitor also go out, i have read there is a way to do this but for the life of me cant find and advice on this subject, any help would be appreciated,

Many thanks in advance.

Most of laptops go asleep or do shutdown or extinguish the screen when the lid is closed. It is controllable from system settings. For Windows:

There's usually an option on most laptops where you can switch off the screen when your connected to a external monitor. On most lappy's its something like Function Key (fn) + F4 or F5. Have a look at the keyboard, the Function keys are normally highlited blue on the keys. You should be able to cycle through a few options, like CRT (external monitor (what you want)), LCD (lappy screen) or CRT+LCD etc. You'll need to futz with the settings until you find what you need.

Make sure that you don't have your 'Power Saving' settings fixed so that it shuts down or hibernates when you shut the lid.
