South of the Tarantula

Hi all and hope you had a happy and safe Xmas.

Thanks Mike and the IIS team for this, second to none astro group.

This is a bit of a work in progress. It is a hard area of sky from my location at this time of year due to temps, dust and wind.
But I really wanted to get some of these beautiful knots and bow shocks created from the wonderful Tarantula Nebula.
This area of sky is just south of the Tarantula and you can see it just to the top of this image.
It is quite grainy. I need a couple more hours of Ha to smooth things out so it is a work in progress.
Such a large dynamic range and it was real fun trying to combine Ha with its makings of nice detail to the rgb.

Details:
Scope- 10" Newtonian working @ F4.6 (with paracorr)
CCD- SXVR-H16 1.32arcsec/pix
Guide- SX OAG & Lodestar
Filters- Anti Halo type II- 2" Astronomiks
Ha- 168' @ 7min subs
RGB- 56' each @ 7min subs.
Pre- process- Flat fields & bias (no dark subtraction)

Here's a link to the unfinished image
[http://www.baytop-observatory.com/cc...80-HaRHagb.jpg]

Hope you all have a great year in 2012 with plenty of clear nights.

All the best
Rich

Very nice, Rich. Should be fantastic when finished.

I did a widefield of the Tarantula with my FSQ-106ED recently and have been meaning to come back with a longer FL.

Cheers,
Rick.

Wow, that view is incredible Rich, after viewing your image I am honoured that you would even comment on mine. I really like the colours in yours.

All the best for 2012 with more clear skies than 2011.

Thanks Rick!
Tried to get out tonight but the blessed wind was coming straight in the observatory opening in chronic gusts, buffeting the scope.
Hopefully have more to add soon.
Look forward to your Tarantula.

Hey Lester.... ah come on mate... your image just took a little time to get it right... looks good now!
And it IS a beast of an area with out a doubt.. I spent hours on the computer trying so many different techniques with mine.. this was over a couple of days...
It's a pretty poor time of the year with this damn wind over our way.... we have some of the best objects in the southern area of sky and it's a real 'berch' when the wind is coming from the exact location at 25+ knots you want to shoot .... my newt is like a sail....
Thanks for the comments though Lester!

Well Richi, that's not bad at all, it's always a mark of a good Spider when the nebulosity looks like it is hanging in space and you nailed that look here nicely.

The partially visible Tarantula looks so tantalising and is screaming "look at me, look at me"

Mike

That is going to be one magnificant image when it's finished (it looks fantastic at the moment!!). The image is rich in detail and as you say knots and bow shocks are lovelly.

Well done Rich and look forward to seeing more!

Very nice work Rich. Maybe needs a crop top and left side to remove the coloured lines present on the edges. I really like the image and the amount of sharp detail.

Hey Marc,
took a while to try and keep the colour in it... with more data to come and add to it, I've got to remember what I did

Thanks Paul.. yeah I left cropping it as I figured it was a work in progress.. bit slack I know!
Hopefully get some more Ha.. even maybe some more colour to save me thinking about doing any lum to better bring out the fainter blue stars that the Ha doesn't fully illuminate.

Thanks guys..
Looks as though the weather is on the improve..
Hope you get out.

All the best
Rich

I hope I can get a couple of reasonable nights to finish it off.

Cheers for that Fred!
It's such a great area.... if you had a fairly long FL setup, you'd never leave it over the year. There's so many different little nebs and knots that make up the whole!

Cheers guys for the comments.
All the best for 2012
Rich

Lovely work with so much going on, your fast scope working well picking up everything with definite 3D look coming across.

John.
