k179 stepper driver, push button on off help

Hi all, does anyone know if it is possible to have two push buttons or even a rocker momentary on-off-on switch to control the forward and reverse directions using the k179 stepper motor driver circuit? As it stands, as soon as power is applied it moves in one direction then if I flick the switch it reverses direction. what i want to be able to do is be able to press the button or rocker switch so it will move one direction, if i release it stops, then hit the other button it goes the other way. I guess this is similar to a focuser controller. This working completely on its own without computer interface.
