M42 Critique please!!

Hi everyone.

Managed to get everything working together last night so this is my 1st serious attempt at imaging. Using an ED80 and EOS60D this image is a combination of 6 x 5 mins and 6 x 1 min subs for the core. Images were processed in DSS and merged in PS.

I have done a few adjustments in PS (Levels, Curves) but still have a lot to learn there.

Your thoughts, ideas and opinions muchly appreciated.

Cheers

Daff

Daff, the backgrounds looks too dark. Maybe the black level is clipped and you've lost some data.

What ISO are you using? Tracking looks good so once this is going, you may want to try for 10 minute subs later. Stick with the shorter subs for now and get a good number of them.

Good luck and let us know how you go.

Darrin...

Daff you clipped the black point badly so you lost lots of faint stuff.
And as Darrin said, you need to take a lot more pictures to stack.

I agree with Darrin. The M42 region is dominated by dust and much lighter. More subs will be very worthwhile, particularly as the camera seems to be unmodified.

Cheers Guys

I was using ISO 400. I will try again tonight and get some more subs. I will have play with the original data again today to and see what I can do.

Thanks for your input

ISO 800 might be better. But that depends on camera equipment, guiding and so on. Try a 800 sub and see how it looks.

It's a beautiful image in many ways with heaps of potential. Daff asked for a critique.

whilst others may be right about clipping the black, i actually like it a lot. its very smooth and has a good colour balance, atleast on my laptop monitor. nice work. the black actually makes it look quite rich.

the more you keep trying the more you'll improve, and once you've done a few targets, go back to the first one and mistakes or shortcomings if any will stand out, cause the more you look at it or tweak it, the more you'd get used to it.
reference it with some images from good sources, and you'll get an idea of what to do.
very good first effort mate. what mount are you using and what are you using for autoguiding.

Cheers

I'm using an EQ6Pro, Orion SSAG with a 50mm guidescope and running EQMOD, PHD and Backyard EOS.

I have a limited view from where I am at the moment. I can only see from north east through to south east so targets are a little scarce at the moment.

Everynight is less setup time and more imaging time so hopefully the weather clears up soon so I can get some more subs.

Daff
