I could only watch it to 1:20

That is such a weird effect that I was almost panicking and started feeling sick!
I was REALLY scared!

That's awesome.

I'm no good with heights after about 4 - 5 metres, it gets too high and I start to freak myself out.

Reminds me of one of the tasks I did on HMAS Perth before safety procedures were rigidly enforced.

I climbed to the top of the mast and removed the cover from the URD-4 aerial by cilmbing above the small platform and onto the base of the mast. No safety harness. Only about 20 metres above the deck but a fall from 20 metres can do just as much harm as 1000 meters.

Barry

PS Why did I do it. Because to fix an internal connection that could be accessed by just lifting the dome the job could be done in 30 minutes.

The official way was to remove the aerial. A job that took 7 trades and a week of organising!

Further to my last
The trades involved:-
On the mast: Me supervising
Rigger to undo the large bolts.
Electrical fitter to remove the aerial
With the crane: Crane driver
Crane driver foreman
Electrical superviser because the crane needed to go
past the limit stops to plumb the height.
Dog man in the box
Rigger
Crane chaser on the ground

I've seen it before. With the right training, gear and experience its a doddle... without it, forget it! Heights don't bother me if I'm on rope (or suitably protected), but by hell they do if I'm not!

That's right Al - connected I'm fine too. I used to climb the West Wall on the Three Sisters which had, at one point, a 700 foot clear drop near the top at the overhang. All your weight and that of the rope and carabiner belt hanging on to a 10mm ledge by four finger tips, or by a clenched fist jammed in a small crevice and feet dangling with no support several hundred feet off the next shelf below was no problem at all. Knowing that my brother of father were on belay, I was fine. Of course the rope lent no support - but was still comforting to know it was there just in case.

People used to free-climb past us - " 'scuse me! Coming through!" and I remember going cold at the thought of them having no safety apparatus whatsoever. I simply wouldn't entertain it.

These days... I'm not so sure I'd still be good with any of it. Self-preservation has truly taken over.

Same here, Chris....self preservation would kick in for sure. But as for the height, I'd have little problem with it. Might feel a little giddy but I'd be able to get past that. Knowing I had a safety rope and carabiner would be enough to make me feel comfortable about it.

I feel ill just watching that. Even a miracle from Saint Jen wouldn't get me up a tower like that.

I feel sick.

No....I'm not overly scared of heights. They don't worry me all that much.

Just so long as you don't panic or do anything really stupid, you're usually fine.

One thing I would make mandatory for working up heights like that....a parachute. Just in case.

The SPF (Sphincter Pucker Factor) rating of that video was 50+ for me!

How do they build something like that? Crane, chopper, carry it all in by hand??
