First light QHY10 - final Sidonio

I managed to sneek in 22x5 min subs of M42 tonight with the new QHY10. Had a few conficts via ASCOM with the mount, camera and dome but finally got that all sorted out. They dont like to play together unless started in a strict order.
Interestingly there are no masks involved with this image as the well depth allows me to get away with just stacking the subs, using levels and curves and a light sharpening in PS3 after flats, bias and flat-darks are used in DSS.
I could have increased the colours and lightened the DSO but I tend to like the dark brooding image that this produced. Its the full frame from the 5" APO and QHY10.

That's very good Allan. It seems to have more resolution than normal.

Is this a one shot colour or a mono?

It seems to be an excellent camera.

Greg.

Thanks, Greg. It's a one shot colour with 10 mega pixels (3900x2616) and 6 micron pixels.
The moon was a killer last night as I was shooting almost down it's throat but it was the first clear night since I had the camera

Alllan,

A great image considering I saw where the Moon was in relation to M42 last night! I do like QHY cameras and the QHY10 seems to do the job very well indeed.

Cheers,
Mario

Looks lovely and fine, how would you compare it to your old QHY8?

Mario, thanks for that the moon really havoced the image initially but then I managed to tame it.

Just think - maybe you inspired me Mike with the new camera and just because its you I did a Sidonio on it just to see what was there. Actually the posted shot had NO blending at all just carefull levels and curves and I managed to keep the core intact with no masking etc.

I loved the physical format of the old QHY8 as the QHY10 looks like an expensive Coke can on the back of the scope and really may tax some focusers, but its bigger chip, pixel size etc win in my opinion. As soon as I sold the old QHY8 I knew I wanted another OSC especially here in the suburbs. actually I was amazed that the 5" covered the chip so well as flats show NO vignetting what so ever. And it doesn't need darks. But you need a good bias due to the downloading characteristics of the chip as red/green are downloaded one side while blue is done the other side and it will give a colour gradient if not processed out.

Great OSC image. So are you in the suburbs with a bit of LP? Did you use an LP filter. Great detail!

That looks pretty cool. Is this RGB straight out the OSC or did you use a NB palette?

Is there a mono version of this chip?

Greg.

I'm 5 Km from BrisVegas CBD with quite a bit of LP but my neighbours are really good and switch off their lights if they see the dome open. Wish Brisbane would do the same!!! But I don't use any LP filter and find they are a waste of money (sorry if I offend filter officianados) and just shoot even if the moon is up as there are so few opportunities to image lately.

Marc, this is straight out of the QHY 10 OSC, stacked in DSS and debayered at the same time then processed in PS3. No NB at all and to be honest Im amazed at the well depth of this chip as you dont need layers and masks in PS to preserve the Trapezium area just careful layers and curves. Im sure that after I worked out the gain and offset for the camera I could go 10 min subs without overfilling the wells. Want to try this OSC with the GSO 10" RC to see if there is any vignetting etc.

Sorry Greg, there is not a mono version - the closest QHY comes in mono is the QHY11 specs here with the Kodak chip.
