True colours?

Hi,

One thing I want to ask the more experienced astrophotographers.
What are the true colours meant to be once you have obtained an image?

Especially through a DSLR.

With comet lovejoy I noticed a variety of different background colours acheived, and even in the comet itself from all the images posted.

I know exposure length, sky conditions and the camera itself has a lot to do with it, but is there any bench mark I should use to achieve true colours.

These are my images of lovejoy, feel free to suggest any improvements.

Cheers,

Justin.
