Thumbs up VicSouth 2011 : 28 - 31 Oct Desert Spring Star Party

"...good friends, wildflowers and dark Mallee skies!"

Bookings are now open for this exciting event that takes place under the pristine skies of the Little Desert in western Victoria. VicSouth is jointly hosted by the ASV and the Astronomical Society of South Australia, offering a great weekend of social and astronomical activity as well as some enthralling observing targets. A full range of different accommodation levels is offered by the Little Desert Nature Lodge, from self-catered camping to bunk room, and even full-on motel room style with air-conditioning. Bring partners and family as there's lots to do apart from astronomy.
VicSouth is open to all. For more information go to http://vicsouth.info/ and click here to download a booking form.

I'm going for the first time this year. Looking foward to it and already have my observing and photography list. I'm surprised there aren't more responses here from IIS members.

Does anyone want to offer car share?
Will chip in for petrol/beer money of course.

I was invited to stay with some friends a few weekends back in a tiny (so small as to not be on google maps!) town in the Mallee called Goyura. No lights to be seen anywhere, clear horizons (surrounded by paddocks) and some of the most incredible skies I've ever seen in my life....

Big fan of the glorious views of the heavens that the Mallee affords

The event now over I have to say this will be added to my calendar for future annual attendance. Although the weather was average to say the least, the facilities, the included food, the accommodation, was all excellent. Needless to say that when conditions are right, this would be a hard to beat seeing location.

Nice people who attended also adds to the attraction. Count me in for 2012!

Here Here Steve

Although, I expected more Melbournians’ to stay Monday night since it was clear, plus it was Cup Day on Tuesday.

I believe next year’s event will be in October because of the eclipse in November.

Cheers Mark

Hi,

anyone taken any pics?
how dark are the skies out there? anyone measured it with the light meter?
October could be a bit cloudy going by this year, but I will try and make 2012.

Yep - pity about the weather. My first time at VicSouth - nice facilities, accomodation, food and company. Great seeing conditons on the Sunday evening - I'll be back again next year.

Here are a few pics I took.
