Thanks very much Chris. The P stands for Preceding, the opposite limb would be F for following. Due to the various configurations of the image provided by the different telescope designs East and West become a bit of a problem. It is less ambiguous to use P or F especially for the researchers that receive and use the data from various amateurs captured with different types of telescopes.
