Stunning Tropical Sun Dog

I have seen many of the shots from the cold subarctic regions but have never seen one myself, let alone in the tropics !

I am still surprised at having seen this and would love to see and hear of anyone elses experiences with sundogs. Closest thing I have seen to this in the past was a sunbow.

Nice one Ian! Yeah, as upper atmosphere features they can appear at any latitude.

There's a selection of my sun dog and ice halo pics on this page if you're interested Ian, along with lots of other 'atmospheric' stuff. I'm a keen watcher & a hazy day is almost as good as a crystal clear one to me. Ahhh, not really, still prefer the crystal clear! Anyway, I've logged heaps of sun dogs from here, but the most startlingly bright one I've ever seen (too intense to look at, like looking at the Sun)... ah, you know the story, didn't have a camera handy. Mostly see them over spring-summer-autumn in hazy skies, but don't see all that many in winter. Cloud when it's around tends to be too thick.

Thanks for the link Rob, the "bright sundog" in your shots is the one that looks most like the effect I saw. When I photographed it on its own the camera was selecting 1/1000th of a sec, so it was pretty bright !

Good Capture Ian, seen and captured a few myself here in SE Qld & Like Rob K mentioned, Not as many about in winter but there are plenty the rest of year if you keep your eyes peeled, I only spotted a nice one last week out wst of Warwick. Camera setting used was Low ISO 200, F/4, 1/4000th, but this can vary depending on light and lens ?

Congrats on the Space Weather Ian.
It must be the season eh. I've seen 2 in the last 12 days. Beautiful aren't they.
