NGC 2997 - Southern Spiral Barred Galaxy

Hello everyone,

here's my first image processed with IRIS. A big thank you to tornado33 for giving me the clues to using IRIS.

This image is NGC 2997 a 10th Magnitude barred-spiral galaxy located in the southern constellation of Antila.

The image is 3 x 3 minute images stacked at ISO1600 and dark frame removed with the Canon EOS 300D on my 12-inch newtonian.

You can see a slightly higher version of the image here: http://www.skylab.com.au/pmsa/ngc%202997.html

When the weather permits I'll be going after this galaxy again but with lower ISO settings hoping to improve detail and colour.

Does anyone know when the clouds will nick off ?

Paul

very Nice Paul, love the detail. I think Scott may not be using IRIS much longer. He might have some news for you on that.

Hi Paul

This is one of my favourite galaxies. I have a David Malin photographs of it on my wall, but I haven't got around to imaging it myself yet.

Well Done

Geeday Itchy,

Yeah this is one of my favourites too! Glad you liked it.
thanks.

I can't wait to do it again - last time the intended imaging was cut short - this time I have a modified camera too - so I might see some reddish nebulae in the galaxy.
