Today's H-Alpha Sun at Higher Mag

Hi All

Managed to do my first H-Alpha solar image at a higher magnification using a recently aquired 2X barlow.

Taken with DMK41 camera through a single stack Lunt LS80THA. Consists of best 15 frames stacked from 1000 taken. No separate composite for the proms, they just happened to get through the processing for the sun's disk.

A full disk mosaic at this scale is quite a challenge but will look forward to the challenge with time and good weather.

That really looks fantastic. What software would you use to do a mosaic, it would be really impressive with that level of detail and would make a gorgeous print.
How do you find the DMK41 to use? The resolution is tempting, but I wasn't sure if the speed would be fast enough?

Nice Ted. Did you get the big prominence? Just processing some the monster images now. Love the resolution, did one very similar.

Thanks. Unfortunately no proms processed. Never got past the top three panels. Work called.... went into conference, came back out 2 hours later and cloudy windy crap here in Sydney! Just not enough spare sun time in between work and weather to complete a mosaic of 11 panels at this higher resolution let alone do anything with seperate panels for the proms exposure!

I certainly now appreciate the amount of work (and time) you need to complete such a task, especiafrom effective workflow in disk coverage/exposure, to stitching and then finally processing the image. Certainly a labour of love!

It's not that hard to do a mosaic, it just means capture on a good day and process over a few nights. That will work for you better.

I think the DMK41 is a great camera. Others in the forums who have been using one for much longer might chime in to add their thoughts. The larger size helps with having less panels for mosaics.


As for mosaic software, you can use Photoshop or several other pieces of purpose built software such as PtStitcher, Panorama Factory etc.


Don't let the slower frame rate worry you. Even on a poor to average days seeing you will capture enough decent frames if you take enough video.

Thanks Rob, I'm just starting to get the hang of processing these images for detail. I have actually done a slight repro to get a little better definition and lower noise on what I originally uploaded by using extra frames for better signal/noise.

I wish I could take my gear to work and image! Occasionally I am allowed to work from home if I have urgent business or other matters to deal with eg specialist appointments. Saves them from me putting in a sickie and they have me on deck in some capacity.
