M42 again

I'm up to a total of 4 hours of data now.
27x8min + 10x3min + some 30sec
Canon 550D @ ISO400
ED80 and HEQ5Pro mount

For a bit of fun I thought I run it through "dust and scratches" too.

Thought about putting a warning in the title about that as I do know some find their sensibilities shaken with the whole "starless" thing. But I like it, so there.

You have captured some amazing detail Jeanette.

I love all the dust around the edges.

I really like shots without stars. It seems to bring out more detail in the object.

There is loads of dust captured in this image JJJ. I really like the area around the running man and think there might be more dust hiding there. Well composed as an image and overall I think it works.

Your right, Jjj. It is as I said for my narrow band images, it is art more than science a lot of the time, and if you like it, that is all that matters.

I'm up to 6hrs of exposure time now. Am processing it atm.
There is plenty of dust to refine, it's just a fine line to travel re. noise.
But this latest is starting to get close to being silky smooth.
I'll keep adding more data to this as the season progresses.

I know you have been disappointed with your 550D (as I am with mine), but you have produced a very nice image from it.

The cooler months have shown that it has great potential. But once the temperature rises above 10C.......sigh.....

If one had the cash to spare to get it modded and cooled, I wonder what sort of images it could produce then??
But for that sort of money, I'd rather invest in a dedicated CCD camera.

Loads of dust there but i don't like the star craved image

On my new led monitor i am starting to see vertical lines over the image in the dim area's.
Maybe it is stretched a tiny bit too much ?

With more data that you are planning to take it will be a corcker of a image

What I really like about this photo is the depth of the nebulosity and the dust surrounding both ngc1976 & 1977

Nice work jjj, but as Martin mentioned, I'm also seeing vertical lines in the area at the bottom with the dust. not sure why.
slightly off topic, but can anyone explain what the source of the dust is?
I'm guessing this is debris from objects or this debris coalesces into bigger objects? I read M42 has a lot of star forming regions and that's mainly H2 and He? but where is this dust from?
your image has really brought that out jjj.

The banding across the bottom of the image, I have that in other photos too, as you can see in this HH image taken the other night.
I'll try applying some bias frames and see if that helps, it should.
If not, I'll have to start framing my images to avoid that area.
The vertical lines....I'm assuming that will go away once I add enough subs to the image.
But the weather is getting warmer, and this camera just doesn't like it when the temperature goes over 10C. It's a shame isn't it.
hee hee, in just a few short weeks I'll be imaging with my cooled CCD.

JJ it is called banding, a lot of Canon camera's have that (my 40D had it too) and the only way to get rid of it is to get more subs and less stretching of the data

The good thing with more subs is that you can stretch it a bit more untill you can see the banding and then go back a bit
