Couple of scams
Just recently got a couple of emails, one from the westpac bank & one from Paypal - Pretty sure they are scams because I don't have an account with either
So watch out for those one's guys/gals.

"From" is the wrong word. "Pretending to be from" is what you mean. If you look at the targets of the URLs in the email you will find things like http://hacked.web.site.somewhere/a/random/directory/name/target-bank-phishing-scam-here
I have accounts with several financial organisations. There are no links in their emails. You have to fill in your own link in your browser.

Chris I know some of the team responsible for internet security with WBC. It's amazing how quickly the links in phishes become broken, at least on sites with a degree of responsible management.

The "Microsoft" team finally rang this morning suggesting that my computer needed to be checked for some problem, it's hard to understand those heavy accents at times.
Beauty now to have some fun with them I thought but they hung up after I told them to hang on while the computer "booted" up.
That's not fair. I wanted my five minutes of fun with them. I've a good mind to ring them back and demand they check my computer.

As I glanced at the screen for "Astro forums" I see under General chat:
" A Couple of Scams by Jen"... Any one of us who is the last to post will look very dodgy!!
Guess I just took over from you Jen!

Don't worry Ric, they'll get back to you soon.
I've had them ring 4-5 times already
if I don't feel like playing with them on a particular day, I just tell 'em I have a Mac.

I also had my first Microsoft call this week ( i've been feeling left out )
Funnily enough, the idiot started out by saying there was a problem with the PC i was "using".
I told him i was sitting in front of the telly drinking red wine
which as an opening gambit was good as it was actually the truth.
He then spent a while trying to "get throught to me" that it was the PC i had turned on ( and connected to the net ) that was the problem.
I then told him i have dial up internet, and if i was on a PC that he could "remotely see", then i couldnt be talking to him.
He wasnt bright enough to twig on at this point.
I guess they think everyone has 24/7 net connections these days.
Anyway he persisted until i had to be rather impolite and hang up.
Gotta say it was more fun than the ads on the telly,
or impersonal spam.

I have a paypal account linked to an email address and I often get scam paypal accounts for my main email account so I know instantly when it's a scam.
When I was sysadmin the company I worked for constantly had an inundation of scam emails, some of them where so badly written they were funny to read.

Many of the well known internet goods and service providers get scam emails sent on their behalf from time to time. They usually have an email address that you can forward the scam to and they will look into it. paypal is one:
Think you might have been sent a phishing email?
Don't click on any links or attachments. Forward it to spoof@paypal.com.au, and then delete the email straightaway.
When I get these type of emails I always check the real company for a "scam bin" and drop them a copy. They always respond with a thank you and say they will investigate.

got another "goodeveneng, you are be having serious problem with yor computer, which I will be fixing!" call.
Always worth an hour of amusement,
so I got myself a nice glass of white and said
"mhmmm", OK,
"Yeeesss, Ive pressed that",
I AM holding down that key,
etc.
This went on for about 40 minutes.
At this stage he was getting a tad frustrated and asked me what I was seeing on my screen.
"Nothing", says I...
10 seconds of silence whilst Mr Nigerian wonders what sort of dope he's dealing with .....
"You must be seeing something" says he.
"Nope, its just black" says I.
10 more seconds of silence whilst the full horror of the situation seeps in....
"But.... that-would-mean-that-THE-Computer-is-OFF!" shouts our little scammer.
"errr, sorry, ....you didnt tell me too turn it on", says I.
Buurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Had fun with one the other day, kept him on the line for 25 minutes, saying I was doing all the things he asked then when he asks me to confirm what sort of computer I have, I tell hims it's an iPad. He asks if we have a Windows computer so I say yes and make him wait while it supposedly boots up.
Once we have gone through "Do you have an icon My Computer?" ... No..."do you have a Start button?" No... "what version Windows do you have" I reply Windows 3.1... there is a moment of silence and he come back with "Are you having a little Joke with me?" to which I reply"Better a joke with me than scamming someone else!"
He swore and hung up.

But a chap rang selling something when I was in Sydney at my fathers house... I him let rattle on for a while and when he sort a responce I said...
"I,m a good boy I can tie my shoe laces"..
he talkes again I give the same reply..
then he says
"oh you are a retard!" as casual as could be and hung up
As I said I feel bad for the not so obvious reasons.

I've been waiting for the call from 'Microsoft' & today it finally came. He introduced himself from the 'Windows service centre'. Unfortunately I wasn't in a good or joking mood so he copped the full on Asi treatment. I can't repeat what I said here, for obvious reasons lol..

Don't feel bad. It's a great technique.
A friend of mine does the same thing on the subways in New York. She pretends to be a complete dribbling idiot as soon as she gets on the train and kleeps it up until she gets off. She has been doing it for years and has never been molested.
Of course carrying an Uzi probably contributes.

Gee I made it to the honour board at last. I got my call from "microsoft" However his english was so poor I could not follow him. I found out where the Ctrl button was and the Start button and My Computer but I could not understand a word he was saying after that so I had to tell him to ring another time as I wanted to watch tele and hung up.
