Portable USB Drive Failure

Greetings.

This is just a little observation I have come across recently that may help you if you end up in that terrible situation whereby your USB hard drive appears to have failed.

I have a WD 750GB and noticed the other day that terrible click click click noise typical of a failed hard drive (reminds of the IBM Deskstar before Hitachi took the brand over - we called them "deathstars" because we had a 90% fail rate at a project back in 2003).

Took the drive to work and it worked a charm. Back home, the clicking noise again.

Turned out that I was pluggin my drive into a 1m extension USB cable. I then realised at work the computer was on my desk so did not need extension cables. Applied this theory back home and it has worked flawlessly if plugged directly into the USB socket on the PC.

Anyway, if you happen to come across something like this, try this out as these USB drives do take a bit of power.

Good luck!

Darrin...
