The Dish, Parkes

All,

When I went to Parkes for the David Malin Awards, I was lucky enough to be given a tour of The Dish by John Sarkissian. I was accompanied by Alex Cherney and his family.

I took a few photographs on the day.

If you haven't been, I say, go -- it's a very inspiring place.

Some of my favourite photographs are here:

We stumbled in there in late 2008, while taking a leisurely drive back from Perth. It is actually the moment that piqued my interest for the stars again.

Some of the best photos I've seen of the Parkes scope. Very nice Humayun.

Nice H, I like the shot in the actual dish. When we did our tour in 2008 we did not get to see that. I found it to be an interesting photographic object for the metal struts and the geometry. I really like the sectional aspect of your shots. When I was doing a lot of architectural shots I would often have that minimalist aspect to my shots. Pieces of a building rather than the whole busy scene.

When we did our tour I did get the one or two shots myself. This one is my favourites of our visit. It's the one Chris used for his astro mag. Sorry Chris I cannot remember what the name was. I don't keep track of where or when I have been published.

Nice shots. I still have some shots from the tour that John took my family and I on after the 2010 awards.

Haven't posted them anywhere yet! I should get around to it.

It was great to think of the history there. It made me go home and watch "The Dish"

The Parkes Observatory does open days for one weekend each year. The next one is in early October: http://www.parkes.atnf.csiro.au/news...opendays/2011/. You get to wander around the whole place including inside the observatory building that forms the support for the dish (unfortunately there is no playing cricket on the dish itself ). I highly recommend it (and the annual open day at the optical observatory at Siding Springs too)
