Gigabit/USB Hub to control CCD, guidecam etc.

Interesting experiment (thanks to Brundah1) in getting data to an imaging/guiding laptop. I have secured a good quality Gigabit/hub that takes 5 USB 2.0 devices input and sends data over Cat5 cable back to the laptop - and anywhere else on the same network. Since I work in a fixed location with power on tap, I am able to locate the hub right at the mount. I have managed to get the hub to talk to the USB devices (including storage and cameras) and the laptop - took a bit of fiddling with the IP address used by the ethernet port on the laptop but now it's sorted and I'm looking forward to connecting up the cameras as well. I wonder if anyone else has had experience with this sort of arrangement?

Peter

I have a USB hub as well, but i couldn't get it to work for anything other than convenient mass storage device. I plug all my 1 TB drives into it now. It is also WiFi too.

Have you managed to get a webcam running at full speed through the ethernet hub yet? I had a quick try today with a cheap ebay hub and although it recognised the camera and connected it to the pc, the pc did not do it's usual bing/bong and refused to accept it. If you succeeded please let me know how.
Cheers

Well, the short answer is NO. It's been disappointing to say the least. I have managed to get the hub to be visible if I connect it directly to my wireless router. But that's not what I wanted. I have a router that is designed to have 2 antennae so I have connected one of those to an external dish antenna that throws the Wi-Fi signal across the paddock to my observatory where I have a corresponding antenna to pick up that signal and send it to an acces point and a switch inside the obs so the various computers in the obs can also connect to the internet and one-another. That part of it works fine.
BUT when I connect the USB hub into the network by plugging it into the switch in the obs it is visible to the computers but any devices plugged into it shpw up as being in another network segment and therefore not accessible. They are visible but n ot accessible. I haven't been able to get any further than that to date.
But even when I can get access to devices using these hubs, the only devices that will talk to me are memory systems - either external HDs or Thumb Drives. And not all external HDs either. Some are visible but I get a message saying they have to be formatted before I can access them. But I know they are fine and full of data.
SO these are of pretty limited value to me so far. I'm using 2 different brands but the results are pretty much the same for both.

Peter.

I have found USB Hubs to be a source of problem. I have had relatively cheap ones work OK when its just 2 or 3 USB connections but other times no good.

I just bought a $30 something dollar hub from Jaycar Electronics and it did not work on my cameras.

The one that seems to work is that HiTecAstro hub that was mentioned on the Software Bisque PMX thread.

Martin Pugh also uses one of these.

They distribute power as well as a USB hub plus can control dew heaters if you use them.

About 135 pounds or so. English company.

Greg.

Greg the hitechastro hub are available from sirrus optics and are great to use. I have had no problems with mine what so ever, everything just works.

That sounds weird. If they are "visible" they are either on the same segment or routing has to be working. If they are not "accessible" is that some Windows paranoia? Do the IP addresses put them on the same subnet? Is the access point running purely as an access point with a single VLAN, not doing any "I'm cleverer than you" things like routing or DHCP?

Aren't those Hitech things (10Mb) usb? I was trying to get 100Mb ethernet to do the same thing, hoping that I could run two cameras running at 30fps. Windows(xp) doesn't recognise the cameras exist even though the hub software does. Even the hub software chucked a wobbly when two were connected and said it could only run one at a time?? Hmmm. Has anyone run two cameras on the hitech at the same time or do you have to switch them?
Cheers

I run my mount (usb control to laptop), camera (qhy9), filterwheel, GPS and guide cam (qhy5) through thr hub at the same time and have had no problems what so ever.....then again i am noIt trying to download @ 36 frames per sec either. Most load would be sending/recieving mount info whilst guiding at 0.2 sec intervals and downloading a 1 x 1 bin 32mb pic from the main cam. I guess you will have to try one to find out and at those rates I am guessing your pics are only small. The hub just works, it got rid of all my usb problems in 1 hit and I am yet to plugin something that won't work.

Mark, are you talking here about just a powered USB hub or one of those Hitecastro does-it-all hubs?
Either way, it's still a USB connect back to the PC isn't it?
