I know its a serious matter but... I couldn't stop my sides from splitting! Its incredible what absolute rubbish people put on websites to make a dishonest buck!

The flag on moon pic is just over the top!

Oh man im gonna get me a Orion SkyWuest!

Seriously, i'm confused...the site is obviously an ad for Orion, but surely not made by Orion. The .org domain shows this. Plus, i dont think they would really need to put up such BS to get some sales...i think their products are pretty well known in the astronomy world.

So why make this page? It doesn't link to some dodgy store or auction site. Instead it refers to amazon and even eBay for a list of products.

Any ideas?

Ok i spoke to someone from the real Orion. They said:

"This is not our website. However, this is a website from a fan of ours. Although we were unaware of this particular website, it is flattering and useful to some customers to be able to view our scopes through a page offering reflections much like this one. We also do sell through Amazon and this site seems to be linking directly to our products available there. We have recently began selling on Ebay also. We do not "Auction" our items however.

Thank you so much for your feedback and we sincerely hope that this will not discourage you from using our website or our brand.
We work very hard to create a website that is useful for our customers and it is important that we are aware of other sites with our product name attached."

So apparently its a fan site...weird.

"It is impossible to be an astronomer without a telescope."

"For exploring deep objects, you could consider a reflecting telescope while a refracting telescope is suitable for local objects such as the moon and "planets. "

"If you think staring at stars in the night sky is an amazing and romantic experience, try doing the same using a telescope and be ready to be swept off your feet." - Sorry to disappoint, but I can think of better "romantic" experiences. http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/....milies/lol.gif

"Fan site"? Well, not exactly - it's potentially a nice little earner for the person who bought the domain and constructed the site, if he can only get his listing high enough in the search engine rankings: Affiliate marketing

Basically it's another, "You too can earn a living from home via the internet" scheme. Create enough of these websites and you can spend your time relaxing on the beach while the $ magically drop into your bank account as people follow the links and suppliers pay you a small commission for each one who arrives at their website via yours.

Unfortunately, too many such site creators are greedy and their websites are slapped together from valueless rubbish like the Orion example. Others of the same ilk can be like this one, Binoculars and Scopes Discount Shop, where there isn't actually a shop at all or even any actual site content - the links you click on the front page just lead to a page of current auctions for those items from US eBay (and a commission for the B&SDS website owner if you follow the auction link to eBay itself).

Yes, I heard this happens a lot these days, Mike. I wouldn't be surprised (although I cannot confirm it) that the information presented is creatively "re-worded" from other sources (like our friend, the poker player).

That ad appears on this site as well, so it MUST be true!

I don't believe there is anything wrong in this. Indeed, I believe it is almost a duty for those who have the stomach for it, to part fools from their money - putting it to better use in the greater economy.

Anything so obviously bogus will only delude nutters, half-wits and Americans, none of which have a history of responsible consumption.

Unfortunately those "fools and their money" are often newcomers to the hobby and deserve to be presented with valuable and correct information. Good thing is that most members on IIS and other astronomy forums are genuine in thier attempts to assist newcomers in entering the hobby and don't treat them with contempt.

Most of the information on the website in the opening post appears to be written with relative correctness. A part from a few "odd" statements, there is nothing overly deceptive that jumps out, except that it is very Orion-orientated.

Regards,
Stephen

Hunh?
I was talking about that "Quantum Jumping" advert on the site.
I quite fancy a bit of Q-J.
I think.
Sounds like it would get the blood flowing in the morning.

The site is create by an internet marketer whose main goal is to get money from people clicking on the google ads at the top of the page and occasionally a commision from amazon if someone actually purchases it. I doubt very much the creator is a fan or even knows anything about orion telescopes. What they do is find keywords which have little competition in google with a decent amount of monthly searches that they think they could rank on google for.

Then create a very minimul website that provides the reader with a small ammount of information with seamingfully useful links (which are usually google ads) that the reader will then click on for more information. Usually the creator of sites like this will have multiple 1-4 page sites just like this one that bring them in decent ammounts of cash if they are able to rank high enough in google.

I create sites similar to this one but I create them with 20+ pages of useful information that are designed to actually help/inform the reader so they are more likely to buy the product I am promoting. Also when making a site I usually only make them about a product I have a decent amount of knowledge of or am passionate about unlike this guy who is just out to make a quick buck.
