Unknow object

Hi everyone

Thank you for spending your time reading this.

I was trying to capture image of M20 from backyard, but I pointed my scope to North and was not tracking. Till I realised, M20 was hidden behind the tree. So I decided to take image around this area. I dont know where I was looking. First I took image through canon eos 400d and I tried using modified philips webcam. I got focus with .5x focal reducer on GSO f/4 200mm, so it became f/2. Which was very fast even 1 sec webcam stream was showing this faint Gobular Cluster clearly on the screen.

When I took image through canon 400d at around 8:45pm, there was no bright object on the left side of image, but when I took image through webcam at 5 sec exposure at around 8:54pm, I noticed the bright object.

Can anyone tell me what this star cluster is and what the bright object captured on webcam imaging.

Image specs:

1. GSO 8" f/4, canon 400d 10 sec exposure stack on 7 frames.

2. GSO 8" f/2 Philips SPC880 5 sec exposure stack on 10 frames.

Both look like Globular Clusters, but just which ones I can't help you. I'm sure a visual astronomer will come along, look at them and go .... Oh that's Blah and Blah.

It's not the butterfly Nebula on the left is it?

Or could be M28 Cluster?

Arif, in what direction did you have your scope pointing??? At what constellations??

Anywhere near the Trifid??

Hi Carl

I am not sure where I was, but this is area (attached image) I was observing. Trifid was behind the tree, so I am sure it was not that. It was somewhere near the M24,M18,M17,M16,M26 or M11. I will try tonight if the sky is clear and will find out exact location.

It's M22 Arif.

Astronomy.net solved it in no time flat. Solution link might work.

I'll CC Matt and the usual suspects.

It is M22 and located the location, but still dont know what that bright object is. I am trying to image it, but it is behind the branch. Will wait for 20 minute to see if come out.

Arif, there is nothing listed in any of the catalogs I use in CdC and close to M22 that would match your object. I would suspect it is a reflection of something out of frame, maybe a bright star but more likely some terrestrial light source. A long dew shield helps eliminate those sorts of things.

Hi Andrew

After comparing both images, I believe it is a red star (please see the attached image). I checked my last night images from canon and it does not show this effect. The only difference between this two photos is effective focal length. I will image it again through webcam using same setup on Friday and let see what it will come up.

I like the link that you send to compare the image.
