Kowa’s BD binoculars are designed to be as compact, light and durable as possible, without compromising high performance. Their attractive, modern design, with its easy-grip rubber armour, fits even small hands and the twist-out rubber eyecups provide comfortable, adjustable eye relief for both spectacle wearers and non-spectacle wearers.
All lenses and prisms are manufactured with multilayered coatings, to maximise contrast and the use of BaK4 glass for the prisms, ensures bright, clear images all the way to the edge of the objective lens. A close focusing distance of just 1.5 metres makes the Kowa BD’s particularly useful for viewing butterflies, insects or other small creatures. The waterproof body housing is filled with dry nitrogen gas to prevent internal fogging, so they can even be used in the rain or other harsh weather conditions.

These binoculars were made in Japan by the makers of the world-leading Kowa spotting scopes and are often compared favourably to the well-known Swarovski SLC binoculars. I bought them second-hand three years ago as a back-up, so they are not the current model, but I’m finally thinning the herd (I had back-ups for my back-ups!), and out they must go. Their exceptionally light weight makes them a pleasure to use and the optics are clear and fungus-free, producing sharp and bright visual images with plenty of contrast.
They come complete with the original, comfortable Kowa strap and soft carry case, an eyepiece rain shroud, objective lens covers, instruction manual and carton, as pictured. They’re in excellent condition (and sold for around $800 when new), but the price here is just $265, which includes careful packing and registered postage to anywhere in Australia.
