Camera Back Pack Help Please

Hi Guys, I am looking for a backpack arrangement that will holds just a Canon Camera with a 70-200mm lens attached.

I have seen one on a site somewhere but for the life of me cant seem to locate it again.

Has anyone come across this sort of carry bag, I know Lowpro put out the Outback one which is OK, but there is another that would suit me better.

Hi Leon

Do you want a backpack (like a rucksack) that you carry on your back?

Or, do you want a waist pack where you have the camera holster on a belt around your waist?

I have missed many a shot with my camera in a backpack where you need to remove the pack, unzip the flap, remove the camera, etc.

With a camera holster fitted to a waist belt, you can just pull the camera/lens out.

A backpack leads to your back/shirt getting sweaty on a hot day whilst walking, whereas a holster on a belt will not have this problem.

You can generally fit a lot more into a backpack and work from the backpack when you have reached your destination.

Dennis, yes it is just the holster type, I can see that as being more useful, and I am not really worried about carrying extra stuff.

The Lowpeo outback dose the job well, but I did think there was another similar one around.

Hi Leon

I use the Think Tank Digital Holster 30 V2.0, which holds the 7D body with 300mm F4L with lens hood reversed, and the 7D with 400mm F5.6L with the “pop out” extension unzipped to make the holster longer.

I like the Think Tank products as they often use thinner foam for padding which makes their gear less bulky. Generally, I do not throw my bags around and no longer go mountaineering, so I prefer less bulk although I think that with Think Tank’s product range, this does not mean less protection.

However, Lowe Pro gear is really excellent stuff, so I guess that it comes down to personal preference.

Do note that camera bodies do not like being carried around too long with a big chunky lens on. The weight of an 80-200 f/2.8 may not be too kind on the lens mount. An f/4-5.6 compact zoom would be no problem. Then again, digital cameras do not like frequent lens changes

Hi Leon

I forgot to mention that with the Think Tank Digital Holster 30 V2.0 for my 300mm F4 and 400mm F5.6 lenses, I have to rotate the lens collar to the 11-o-clock position so the body/lens combo can slide in more easily.

This is with a 4-inch long Arca type mounting plate attached to the base of the lens collar foot.
