Compact digital camera for travel

I'm about to start a new job and will be doing more business travel than I have for a while. I don't really want to drag my Nikon D700, lenses and accessories halfway around the world for a few hours of photography in a week or two of travel, so I'm thinking about buying a high quality compact digital camera. I'm more interested in landscapes than portraits. Any advice or suggestions appreciated!

Thanks,
Rick.

Family members have various Lumix models and I've heard no complaints. You can probably find one to fit your tastes. SWMBO has one with a 10x optical zoom.

Thanks, Andrew. The LX5 is on my list for consideration and looks like a capable compact.

Cheers,
Rick.

I have a Lumix FZ35 and it shoots RAW or jpeg. I'm very happy with it.

The Fuji X100 has a aps-c sensor so you may be interested in that, but be wary it has a fixed focal length prime lens that isn't interchangable.. though extremely sharp.

Thanks Odille and Jason.

It's tempting to go for one of the new breed of compact cameras with a largish sensor and interchangeable lenses, but the whole point was to find something that would fit in a pocket.

Decisions, decisions...

Indeed the X100 might be just a little large for a pocket camera. Either way, still plenty of good quality small sensor compacts which will be tinier in size too I suppose you just can't expect the noise performance if your D700

Canon G12 is full featured and my personal choice. Very flexible application including raw.

Thanks, Rowland. The G12 is a bit chunky, but it's very capable and on my list. I definitely want the ability to shoot RAW!

Cheers,
Rick.

Am also a fan of the Lumix, and have had a FZ28 for quite awhile, but is a bit chunky. Also have a little Fujifilm EXR (very compact) nice zoom (15 x), but does amazing panormas, which is suuuuuch fun!! Alas, I dont think the EXR has RAW, but I dont shoot raw anyway.
I will take both these overseas later in the year, and not my Canon.
Cameras coming out these days are amazing and do everything.
