Really nice pieces of engineering, aren't they. Thanks for the YouTube link.
Samsung also demoed some folding AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light
Emitting Diode) displays and a transparent AMOLED display at this year's CES.
The folding one shows no crease.
This month's Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineer's (IEEE) Spectrum
Magazine has an article by John Wager and Randy Hoffman entitled "Thin, Fast,
and Flexible Semiconductors".
The Thin Film Transistor (TFT) backplane is a crucial component of a AMOLED
display and the article highlights the advantages of using amorphous oxide
semiconductors rather than the traditional amorphous silicon to form the thin films.
The authors put forward the case that such semiconductor materials have additional
benefits for flexible and "paperlike" displays.
