Remakes - The Prisoner and Survivors
OK, whilst talking of remakes aka Dr Who, I am interested in two other recent tv series remakes and others views.
The first is Patrick McGoohan's, 60's series, 'The Prisoner', set in Sir Clough, Williams-Ellis, beautiful miniture scale village of Port Meirion in Wales. this was an immediate cult hit and the grounds and hotel there remain a shrine to the series to this day. I had some concerns when I read a re-make was to be made in conjunciton with US TV. My fears proved grounded as it was made in the us and the 'villiage' was set in a desert. To me this was a most disappointing series, dark, characterless with none of the freshness, charm, sponteneity and humour of the original. Lead Jim Caviezel appeared to reprise his role in 'The Passion', and was totally miserable throughout. Ian McLellen's telents were totally wasted in this piece of US biased rot. No, I didn't like any of this at all.
The Post-Apocolyptic series of the '70s', 'Survivors' was another cult hit, but it did lose track of its original premise towards the end, concentrating far too much on the characters, to the degree that creator Terry Nation - of Dr Who fame - refused to write any more for the series. The recent remake was suprisngly good, though I found Paterson Joseph just not ceditible. I think in the end, both remade series suffered from poor viewing, with material for the latter canned by the BBC.
Any views on these remakes?
Eddie
