Kosciusko National Park

Hi all

Has anyone done any overnight stays in Kosciusko National Park?

I'm thinking of heading up to the alpine regions after Winter, and would love to know more about this area - namely, is it a good place for seeing?
The plan is to do some wild camps in the back-country.. nothing too off-piste, but definitely away from civilisation

Does anyone know if the area provides good views for astronomy?

Thanks in advance
Adam

Hi, how long after winter are you talking about and which part of KNP do you want to visit? After the resorts close is the start of the xc spring touring season, so still heaps of snow and some of us usually ski into November. Good dark skies but the weather can be variable and change quickly. Snow and blizzards can still occur at that time of year.

Regards
Keith

I have camped on the summit of Kosciuszko for the last three Australia day eves in a row. Beautiful!

I took this time-lapse on the first year.

Turn it up Ric!

You are not allowed to camp within 200 metres of the ACTUAL summit and 200 metres of the Toilets at Rawsons Pass just down the hill. Anywhere else up there is fine mate. Summertime nights I have been up there are usually to a low of about 8 degrees, but the mountains have their own weather that can change in 30 minutes.

There are camping spots on the right hand side of the road a few km after the park gates heading to Thredbo that are quite nice, but as far as views of the sky go, they are a little closed in.

All the countryside leading nine kilometres from Charlottes pass up to Kosi are devoid of any and all trees, so it's perfect for night viewing and photography.

Baz.
