Question Free Web Hosting

Does anyone have any recommendations for free web hosting sites?

I don't just want an image hosting site - I also have web pages to display.

My current web site is plagued with problems such as: FTP transfer won't work, file upload assistant won't work, admin are uncontactable, and my guest book is being spammed daily at a rate I can't get on top of, and I can't delete or disable it. So it's time to close the account and move elsewhere, I feel.

Ideally I'd like something where I can post a few images as well as web pages, but I'm prepared to consider maybe splitting it all up and using an image host and a web host....

Have you got any recommendations?

Al.

I can vouch for www.webs.com

I search for ages for a free web host. I have been using them for ages. But they do have banner ads but for $14.95 per year you can eliminate the ads if you wish.

No. I'm on satellite, and they don't.

Hi all,

I thought I would bump Sheeny's thread, even though it is a bit old.

Does anyone know of any free webhosting sites that use FTP?
I have a free Webs dot com site and a Tel$tra blog site but neither
offer FTP uploading.
I have tried drivehq dot com but from what I've found so far, any ftp
upload expires in 20 mins???!!! (I may have that wrong though)

I have a "free" web site. It probably can be set for ftp but I just log on as a remote terminal. It has unlimited space but the maximum Up/Down speed is 100KB?s. If I want a large upload I load everything onto a DVD and plug it into the server.

When I say free I mean It only cost me a G11, a QHY10 and a Coronado to date.

I've been using blogspot.com for content and linking images from flickr.com. Works well I think, although because I'm a sucker for punishment I'm in the process of going back to hosting my own server here at home.

Thanks Troy, but yeah , the ftp is the thing I need.
Webcam software I have needs to FTP to a site, with maybe a 30 sec to
5 min frequency.

Steve, I don't know what FTP is, but I use 2 different free website providers,

Wix, and Bravenet.

Wix is more an image gallery style and has Flash, and Bravenet is like normal websites but has a banner across the top if you choose the Free version.

Here are mine to look at,

The Wix site: http://www.wix.com/ballaratman/astropics

The Bravenet website: http://www.astronomycamps.bravehost.com/

I don't know how adverse people are to paying a small monthly fee for webhosting but maybe this is an option. I tried free hosting but always found that they were at least one catch that made them frustrating to use. I ended up getting a paid service based in the US. For US$3.99 a month you get 10GB of storage space with unlimited traffic. You also get a free domain registration and FTP access. I have been using them for 3 years and never had a problem.

1&1 web hosting

Steve, tell me more about what you need the FTP for. I have an FTP server and could host you. How much space would you need?

In a nutshell Troy: logging in to a URL and checking an (almost) live view
of a remote observatory....webcam uploads a jpeg every minute or so.
Overwrites same file name. No huge storage for the host, just needs FTP
capability.

Thanks guys for the suggestions.
Looks like a minimum fee per month might be the go.

Steve

I spent a long time looking for a free web host who would provide all the services I was after only to fall back to a paid site at Bravenet. It is not overly expensive and provides a host of services.
I think from memory I pay something in the vicinity of $100/year and get 30GB of web space, 600GB/month of bandwidth, FTP, PHP configurable, SQL and Front page extentions. I look at it as a small amount to pay for almost every service you could want including domain registration for the first couple of years.
There is options to pay in advance and get significant discounts for 2,5 and 10 years. I run several diferent services on my site and still have oodles of room to experiment with different web solutions and also providing hosting without domain registration etc.

To me a very good service, quite fast and very friendly.
