Kindle for travel

Just downloaded kindle onto my laptop to see how it goes, all free, then bought a $3 book on southern Spain - wow!! This looks excellent!

Instead of lugging travel books and novels, I will download to my my small laptop to take over to Spain later in the year.

A few girls at work use Kindle on Ipads and Ereaders, but i still want my laptop for emails/pics/skype etc. I may still change my mind as I discover something some new info. I wouldnt mind an Ipad, but had bought this little netbook 2 years ago for travel, so should still do the trick.

Anyone travelling, or planning to travel with kindle?

Hi Liz,

Kindle seems like the best compromise client for e-book readers at the moment if you are located in australia.

I travel frequently with work and used to take my sony vaio with me everywhere along with my datastick and notebooks.

My Sony now stays at home and l only take my IPAD. It is brilliant. I only carry one small item and I have global roaming 3G access to anything anytime. I even have full access to my work Citrix farm and home remote windows 7 desktop

I have found that the IBooks reader for the IPAD is very good in terms of ebook formating and the IPAD is a great format for portability and screen size.

The only problem is access to actual ebooks. Many of the copyright laws seem to keep access to the large volumes of ebooks restricted to US or Europe regions.

The online store for iBooks has a very limited selection of books. The Kindle client for IPAD/Windows has a larger selection of books.

Interestingly enough NOOK (Barnes & Noble) has the largest amount of ebooks online but the least amount available to our region. Nook also seems to have the best converted ebooks (not all converted ebooks have the same quality conversion).

The reckon the best alround system would be to have a Nook PC Client with an American Account then upload these into the iBooks reader

If you are looking at options I would give serious consideration to an IPAD2 with Kindle & iBooks client.

I didnt want to go down the Ipad path yet, as already have a little netbook. Dont get me wrong, I would love one, but cant justify it ..... yet. I did hear that reading on the IPads is more difficult, but I suppose depends on the amount of reading done.

You could....errr...buy a Kindle in the flesh?

I got a little one a few months ago. Great for reading books from beginning to end. Pretty poor for anything else.

OK, bought 1 - was either that or an Ipad, but am trying to save, so Kindle waaaay cheaper. Done deal.

Kindle is just awesome. I got one recently and I use it primarily at home. When I'm on the move I use the Kindle app on iPhone - it automatically syncs between the devices so when I open the app on the iPhone it picks up where I left off on the Kindle at home and vice versa. It's brilliant!

I bought a Galaxy Tab. Great for ebooks, browsing, banking, etc. It has full access to the android database.

Also acts as a wireless access point for my laptop when I am not at home.

Last night I also downloaded an app that turned it into a remote for my laptop - the ultimate in laziness - so I can watch tv episodes from my computer without getting up to select them!

But the very best thing is that I am not constrained by the Apple brand, and all of the proprietary nonsense that goes with it!

My kindle already has around 350 books on it! I even use Calibre, a free conversion program to convert PDF books to Kindle format. Somehow I stumbled on about 50 astronomy books in PDF fromat so I just converted them into MOBI format and transferred them to my Kindle. Over all I find the Kindle easy to use and very satisfying. In an age when many would rather watch TV it is great to know that you can carry a portable library for those of us who would rather read!

Hey Liz ... I received my Kindle about 2 weeks ago ... got the one with 3g and wifi .. 6 inch screen ... bought a leather " glove " for it off e'bay and
Downloaded ( for free ) from Amazon .com ... ebook on History of Astronomy.

Great little device.
