Planetary Neb in M46 NGC2438 - HiRes.

SPX350 with 2xPowermate F9.1, Mintron12V6 (GStar-Ex), Astrodon filters.

Quite a faint and large planetary always wanted to see close-in as wide M46 images don't show it very well. At mag 10.8 and about 80% the size of M57 at 80" wide it shows as a beautiful ring with delicate red and blue colours. It is unrelated to M46 and much closer.

In the video at 2.56sec exposure the nebula looked extremely faint but stacking so many really brought it out strongly. Stacking so many has created a very smooth and detailed image probably my best with this uncooled 8bit video camera.

LRGB.
L=1400x2.56sec exposures.
RGB=700x2.56sec exposures each channel.

Great GSTAR shot John.I run mine into a CRT TV that scans at 100Hz and has a zoom function very good for planetaries but only a black and white version (10" Scope) thanks for the colour rendition.

Yeh that's a great shot John, lots of cool detail and nice delineation between the red and blue/green within the ring. It compares quite favourably to Adam Blocks wonderful version actually and given Mt Lemmons conditions and the equipmenmt used then you can be justly proud of your effort .

your post inspired me to go back and have a look at an almost identical pic that i took of M46 in April last year... There was NGC2438 sitting in the middle. I used a Gstar Ex with my C9.25 LRGB L1500, RGB 600 each.

My colours seem to be very different tending more to red/yellow, must be in the processing or something? I'll post it up later if you want.

Thanks for comments, was very suprised how well this came out with delicate patches of colour. Would be interested to see your result Paul, 2438 is quite faint but as Mike said AOP have a fantastic image of this for reference.

That's a fantastic image of this little gem, showing lots of intricate detail and some very nice colours.
I imaged this one a few years ago with the ToUCam, but not as close up as yours. It's a great little nebula, thanks for sharing.

Here's the Pic as promised. The coincidence of same time of year, same camera, same exposures was interesting. I'ts amazing just how much detail can be brought out by these little video cameras.
