How good are Dew shields and heat straps?

Hi all,

Just wondering, I'm starting to need some kind of moisture controlling aparatus for my scope. I'm thinking of a good dew shield to start with, and possibly a heating strap when things get more pronounced. I'm hoping someone can answer a few questions for me and help me decide.

My question(s) are:

1) Would certain heating strap arrangements on the scope cause convection based air turbulents that distort the view?

or

2) Would it be better just to electrically fan the primary lens at ambient temperature, and then stop the fan (vibration) when viewing?

Has anyone tried the fan idea?

Regards...
