Found - My very first glossy publication

I was thrilled to find these pages from US Sky&Telescope June 1987 in an old portfolio I had in a cupboard a few days ago and I thought some might find them interesting?

This represents my first astro publication in a glossy mag. In those days one posted actual prints or slides or even negatives to the US (nothing published in Australia then), we also included quite a bit of written information but as you can see the article is rather short and a little behind the eight ball, US S&T sat on the story for a while for some reason..? With the advent of internet and email it is a lot easier and faster these days to make submissions.

$3000 was biiiig grant money for 1984/5 too! especially for a 16 and 17 year old.

The article "is" a little inacurate, the $1000 mentioned was to upgrade several display panels not just the Milky Way mozaic resulting in an impressive glass covered multi panel display, unfortunately I have no photos of the complete display . This is a (poor) shot of the Milky Way mozaic panel refered to in the article though.

The upgraded panels were intended for educational use and had student work sheets made up to use with them, they remain in Canberra somewhere, rotting I suspect (or turfed out) in the bowels of the ACT schools authority..?

Note the ad for an early internet-like forum on the left hand side of the left page.

Meeer just a bit of nostalgia

Mike
PS. those contact details are long gone.

I'm 24 years late but congratulations!!!

I enjoyed those 2 pages, I think it would be awesome to see more old articles about how things were done in the past and how the results looked.
The ads are fantastic too! Compuserve!

Thanks for having a look guys, bit of fun, was nice to find these pages again - cool to reminisce occassionally.

Yeh Marc took my first astrophoto in 1982 so it's closing in on 30 years for me now (with about a 10 year break thrown in there while I tried to become the Worlds Strongest Man - doh! )

Luigi you should come over for the AAIC in July - there will be a bit of what you suggest in my presentation

Mike
