The February 2011 edition of the
Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE)
Spectrum Magazine has a feature article by
Spencer Klein, of the Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory (LBNL), entitled - "
IceCube: The Polar Particle Hunter - Searching
Antarctica for the frozen paths of cosmic-ray neutrinos".
Klein flies to the South Pole station, where technicians have drilled 86 holes
of 69cm diameter to a depth of 2.5km below the surface. The holes are now the
homes of very sensitive light detectors which 200 scientists, engineers and
technicians from 40 institutions are using to search for the signs of neutrinos
that have originated from elsewhere in the cosmos.
