Saturn storms Jan 24th in quite reasonable seeing.

Hi All,

Was up at 2:30am local this morning to image Saturn. There was only one cloud in the sky and it covered Saturn. Thought about going back to bed as the cloud seemed to be moving very slowly. 1 1/2 hrs later I was able to start capturing data and the seeing was quite reasonable.

I have 5 RGB & 807nm IR data sets at approx 30 min intervals. Have posted the first RGB of the session and also an animation of all 5 RGB's. The animation shows the very bright Western end of the storm structure crossing the planet and rotating over the Eastern limb and clearly shows the Eastern and considerably fainter end of the storm structure coming from the West, a bit further to the South in latitude, virtually completing a band of SED's related storm structure around the planet. This is without precidence. I have also made an animation of my 5 807nm IR data sets.

This is a very nice set of images, the structure really showing especially in movement, the IR animation is very interesting found mine at 742nm was not up to much.

Thanks very much John, your RGB image from the same morning is a ripper. Saturn does present problems in IR, as you are no doubt aware.

Even with my 16" aperture I am down to 10 fps with a histo of just over 60% it is one instance where the size of the scope makes a big difference.

Thanks very much Houghy, with the recent SEB revival on Jupiter followed up by this monster storm on Saturn, if there ever was a time to be a planetary imager, then this is it. Planetary imaging heaven, for sure.
