There is software that will do this type of thing to any normal image thus it isn't all that difficult par se but in this case there was a lot more in it...and in case you didn't read how Chris did it look here

Kudos for sure and a very worthy APOD

Making something relatively simple into something special is a talent in itself, the guys who think up and plan the sort of thing Chris has here are very clever.
