Bintel Super view 50mm eyepiece

Hi all, has anyone used the Bintel super view 50mm 2" eyepiece. Just wondering what the eyepiece performed like. I would use it in 14" LX200, as some of the larger DSOs are too large to fit into the FOV with my 32mm Erfle 2".

Thanks.

It's a decent eyepiece but has a 50 degree AFOV.

I use a 40mm Titan II ED 70 degree AFOV (same as Paragon) in my C11 - gives nice views though the outer field is poor, probably due to field curvature of the scope (I keep forgetting to check).

Thanks for your reply Tony. Bintel lists the AFOV at 60 degrees.

All the best.

Hi Lester, I find figures for AFOV and eye relief are often exaggerated.

The 50mm Superview shows a smaller TFOV than my 40mm Titan II. For the Superview to show the same TFOV it would need an AFOV of about 55 degrees, thus I think the correct AFOV figure for the Superview is closer to 50 degrees. (assuming the Titan II is 68 degrees AFOV).

The 50mm Superview will still show a larger TFOV than your 32mm erfle but perhaps not as large as you were expecting.

Thanks for clearing that up Tony. So what is a good 50mm 2" eyepiece? The Bintel one is the only one I have found.

Have you considered using a 0.63 reducer/corrector and a 35mm Panoptic? That would give you the largest TFOV achievable in your scope, approaching 1 degree, along with better edge performance.

No I hadn't considered that; good point Tony. I don't spend much time viewing, usually I am imaging. Just that the other night for the first time I had an enthusiust drop by that is into viewing. I will use my f6.3 reducer/corrector next time.

Appreciate your help.

For some quality views may I recommend the Tele Vue 41mm Panoptic (68deg AFOV) giving you the maximum possible true field or the Tele Vue 55mm Plossl (50deg AFOV) giving the same maximum true field with a bit more exit pupil.

The 35mm Panoptic option with f6.3mm reducer sounds good but you may not get focus and may vignette slightly. The reducer was designed for use with 1.25" eyepieces to give a larger true field.

A 55mm Plossl used to be THE standard wide field eyepiece for a 14" SCT but the 41mm Panoptic is a very nice alternative giving a wider window to look through.

Thanks Astro, when I hear Televue I see many $$$. As I am mainly not a viewer, would be interested to know how the cheaper eyepieces compare to the Televue type. All the best.

No worries. When I see 14" SCT I also see $$$. Look at it this way, would you put cheap tyres on a performance vehicle?

I don't have either a 14" SCT or a cheap Plossl so I cannot advise further and perhaps others may chime in. If you don't get any replies and want to go the cheap option it'll only cost you $59 to find out what it is like and if you are not mainly a viwer it may be just right for you.

Ask BINTEL as they sell both the cheap Plossl and the Tele Vue and will give you a straight answer.

I have three low power ep's : A vixen LV50mm, Masuyama 45mm, and a TMB Paragon 40mm.

The Vixen LV 50mm is a gorgeous eyepiece, pin sharp to the edge of the field. It is still possible to find one new with some hunting around. Lots of eye relief, too.

My second choice is the TMB Paragon 40mm where the actual field of view is set by the inside barrel (no field stop) - as big as you can get in a 2" barrel, a tad more magnification and less eye relief. The Paragon design is a modified orthoscopic and hence very sharp edge to edge.

The Masuyama has a very similar FoV but is not as sharp as the LV50 IMHO.

Between these I like the LV50 most on my Maksutov - and this is AFTER trying assorted TeleView eyepieces.

PS it is a fairly substantial lump of glass... should do nicely on a 14"

There is a Paragon 40mm for sale on Astromart too, BTW.
