SkyAtlas 2000.0 - Field edition

Went to Bintel this afternoon and returned home with SkyAtlas 2000.0, Field edition (and nothing else

). Wow, this is a beautiful set of large charts (bigger than A3), just what I was after. Nice step up from my Ellyard & Tirion "Southern Sky Guide".

These charts look well worth the $AU72. White stars, down to mag 8.5, on a black background. And I suspect they have most DSOs viewable in my 8" Dob: globs to mag 11, galaxies to mag 13, planetaries to mag 14. (But I already spotted a spot with no galaxy where I'm pretty sure I have seen what I believed to be a galaxy on several occasions... barely visible though.) DSOs are drawn to scale too; nice!!

And you get this glow in the dark transparent overlay with telrad markers (yippee!) and some measuring grids (donno what these are for yet).

The charts are supposed to be water resistant, but they seem to be nothing more than thick paper, so dew would probably ruin them pretty quickly. A big arts-style folder with see through plastic sleeves to stick them in would be great. Now, where can I get one at reasonable cost?

I got the same charts and got them laminated , worth doing , mine have survived both heavy dew and heavy handling .....you might find this link handy to http://www.mapug-astronomy.net/Astro.../SkyChart.html

Is their such thing as 1 great big chart I could for example put up in my Observatory....?????

Striker,

Pasting SA2000 would be too large for a wall hanging, but something pretty manageable to make would be to stick together Tirion's new Star Charts ($20, and already laminated). They're back and front (and oriented for the southern hemisphere - yippee!) so you'd need two sets to make a complete wall chart. (I'm thinking of something similar myself.)
