Thanks Bojan;
I find the final statement of great interest:
Quote:
"Our goal, eventually, is to make radio maps of the sky showing how and when reionization occurred. Since we can't make those maps yet, we are starting with these simple experiments to begin to constrain the basic properties of the gas and how long it took for galaxies to change it," Bowman said. "This will improve our understanding of the large-scale evolution of the universe."

These re-ionisation maps would help us to understand the large-scale distribution and morphologies of galaxy clusters, filamentary structures etc.
What a tremendous step forward it would be to be able to accomplish this.
I was unaware, (until now), that such 'mud-maps' could not be constructed.
It really is reminiscent of the days before Cook's voyages where global maps had big chunks missing ..
Fascinating.
Cheers
