Buying a 5D MK2 duty free.

Hi guys.

I'm flying back to to scotland this week and was thinking of getting myself a 5d mk2 for the trip and wanted to know if I'd be better off waiting and getting in the duty free area of the airport.

Also would I be better buying it this end or in the UK???

Any thoughts?

Buy it from d-d-photographics.com.au (if you're not concerned about genuine Canon warranty), take the receipt to customs and claim GST back.

Like H says, or if you want an Au warranty, price shop around and you can still take the receipt with you claim the GST at the airport.

The advantages over duty free include that you can get used to it before you leave, and ensure you haven't missed any accessories you "just have to have".

Make sure you read the rules first. Last time I went OS you were only allowed one receipt per traveler.

You will likely pay MORE at the duty free airport shop, though maybe save a few bucks at one of the in-town stores.
With a complicated instrument like a digital camera, I'd want the warranty and pay the excess, outrageous though it is.
Don't bother buying in the UK, they are about 30% more expensive and if you've bought the camera from an authorised dealer, Canon will honour the warranty anywhere.

The situation with Nikon is that the lenses have an international warranty but bodies do not. I think it is the same with Canon.

It is, yes.

Buying from DPP is a no brainer for me. I bought my 5D Mk II there and will buy from them again. Lenses are covered anywhere in the world anyway, and DPP have their own in-house warranty service people. A couple of people I know have had cause to utilise this facility and their only comment was "we wish Canon had a similar level of after-sales service". Not a bad recommendation.

My source was the Sales Manager for Canon Australia but that was 2 years ago - and being in sales, he might have been lying!
But I did get my locally bought 30D repaired in France on warranty in 2007.
I only had to produce the original receipt from the dealer. Fortunately my wife thought to bring it!

Thanks guys. I called them this morning but they didnt have any in stock in the syd shop. I went to Harvey norman and mentioned the price on the dd website and they said the best they can do was $2750. I bought it, for the sake of $150 and the aussi warranty i thought it was an awesome deal.

Just waiting for that battery to charge now, ooooh the anticipation...
